Redemption Tour Part Deux, Week One

Hey folks,

We’re alive and well in Saskatoon. We survived our first week back on the road nicely too. We got to hang at our Uncle Pat and Aunt D’s for a minute in Trenton. On our down time we stopped into our pal’s studio for a fun visit. Thurday we had a quick in and out with Toronto, which we all agreed we enjoyed a little more than our usual – stay for four or five days. Before we knew it we were headed north for the Lavigne Tavern to make some new friends. Guy and Judy run the joint and are some real nice folk. The Tavern itself is right up our ally. Good Pizza and a real vibrant room to sing in! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we were flattered at their “best band to ever play Lavigne” banter! Can’t wait to return! Here is a funny pic of us rocking out…

We hit the road bright and early Saturday to find our old friend HWY 17 and to make the long drive to Winnipeg with a quick pause in Wawa. We made Wawa after a quick stop at the Voyageur Cookhouse for some home made baked beans (Karl had the Chili). We had a fun , intimate show in Wawa and after a quick Turkey feed we hit the dark road for Winnipeg. It’s a harrowing drive to make at night but it was necessary. Fortunately we only saw one moose. We also got a pretty awesome sunrise out of it too!

We rolled into Winnipeg around noon to make new friends with our host, Ainslie. Much to our surprise, Ainslie was in the process of whipping up a little turkey dinner. Two in less that 24hrs! Spoiled Bastards indeed! Our venue in Winnipeg was awesome. An old theatre transformed into a show room. Real nice folks running it too. After the show we hit up the Times Change(d) club to catch the one and only, Big Dave Maclean. After Dave’s set we got up to rock out a couple tunes. We had Clayton Sample sit in with us. Clayton used to play with The Rockin’ Highliners who I caught a few times at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Fest years back. Even Big Dave sat in on Harp for a tune. Real good times. Here is a pic of Karl Bastard having fun. Yep. This is what it looks like folks….

Now we’re in Saskatoon and are chillin’ at my cousin’s house. Pretty nice to hang with family and have some home cookin’. One show down at Bud’s already. Two more to go though then it’s off to rock the Main Liner Pub in Medicine Hat this weekend, Really looking forward to that!

Some press has started rolling in for this tour too so I tought I’d post a link or two….Here is a nice article from Calgary based BeatRoutes Magazine. Click here. A little mention in our Pal Jim Jones’ Blog Here. Jim is a DJ for Power 97 in The Peg. This has one of my favourite quotes ever in it…have a read and let me know if you think you know what part I’m talking about!

So later this weekend is The Music NB conference in Moncton NB. There will be lots of showcases as well as an award dinner to boot. We’re up for Blues Recording of the year and the voting is open till the end of this week. If you’d like to help us out by voting all you need is an email address and you’re good to go. You can vote HERE and click off Best Blues Recording as well as Fan Choice. There are lots of folks to votes for who have been kicking ass and taking names lately from Sleepy Driver to Andy Brown to Scotty and The Stars and Chris Colepaugh. check it out and take part!

Well that about gets us up to date. I hope to see some of y’all out there! Feel free to tell you’re friends across the country that we’re out here and that we’d love to meet them, and don’t forget to check out our tour dates. More dates are posted all the time!

Better Late than Never?

Man. I feel like I’ve been such a slacker and that I’ve neglected y’all in Blog world. Well I have been a lil busy so it’s not like nothings been going on….

We just finished a quickie with Ontario and then did our annual three night run in St. Andrews NB at The Red Herring. We have a long history with the folks who own that bar and it’s always like going home. This past weekend was no exception. We had a killer time and the crowds were awesome. Big ups to everyone who came out on the Sunday. What a freakin’ time!

Since I’m still homeless I’ve been hanging the past week at the family camp at Davidson Lake. It’s been awesome but there is no internet so I gotta come to the city to work. Oh well pros n cons I guess. I Just finished a radio bit with Matt Rainnie at CBC in Charlottetown that will air today. We’re promoting the Cd release show that happens Saturday at The Alibi in Charlottetown. We’re stoked to get back to the island and rock a new joint! Show starts at 9.30pm and the cover is $10. Tell a friend!

Ok, so I FINALLY edited up some more footage of our west coast tour video. This is a little compilation of our time at the amazing Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet BC. We get to see some beautiful places and this joint was right near the top. Imagine The Bastards staying at a world class resort! We were beside ourselves. This is definitely the nicest place we’ve ever stayed. I’m editing some video of the other end of the accommodation spectrum now so I hope to have that done in a week or so! Enjoy this video and remember if you are viewing on Facebook visit www.rossneilsen.com as the video’s don’t play so well. Also the video is from my crappy camera so it’s poor quality but hey, it’s all I got!

I hope y’all are well and enjoying summer! Rock ya soon,

Ross

On Tour: Back in the Saddle Again

Hey all! Well after a few NB shows and a weeks vacay we got back into Ruby this AM to trek to Ontario for a week. Today is a drive day as our first shows are in North Bay.

It took us a while to get moving but after a crappy lunch at the 40 Acre in Grand Falls and a stop at the Edmunston Wal Mart for some supplies we we’re well on our way. It’s hot and sunny now which is a nice contrast to the rainy morning.

We tried our new van coffee maker today. I picked it up in bangor at Mardens for 6.99! Great deal. We velcroed it to the cooler for easy, safe coffee brewing. Turns out it only makes 2 cups and takes about 20mins but the good news is once you hit start you just have to sit and wait! Sure enough, tasty van coffee! We’ll see how long it takes is to get too lazy to use it and revert to shitty gas station coffee!

Anyhow, just wanted to let y’all know we’re back out there so come and get it!

On Tour: All Good Things Go On And On

Well, first I must apologize for my slackness lately. I know I haven’t been posting updates like I should. Don’t worry. When I get home I ll sort through the memories and post some more.

You can always tell the turning point in the tour when it goes from mindless fun touring to hanging on by your finger tips due to severe sleep deprivation, poor food and long hours sitting in the van touring. Most folks we talk too seem to think 9 weeks is a lot or too much for a tour. If you had asked me earlier this week I may have agreed but today I had a great sleep in a comfy hotel so I feel renewed.

Fortunately the last stretch before we made the long trek home was a string of some of our fav venues so that always helps!

The past week was filled with 19 and 12 hour drives and it really beat is down but we made it. We just played our last non maritime show for a few weeks. It was at the acoustic grill in picton. It’s an awesome place filled with good people beer and food! Now we re waiting for the ferry on highway 33 and then we ll be hitting it hard for home.

We re very stoked to be getting home to friends and family. It’s been our best tour ever. Some kick ass shows, a wedding, good hangs with friends, LOTS of BBQ and great food. Just awesome. Just the same though we re excited to rock our last 12 hour drive to get home and relax for 48 hours before getting back to it. The tour might be over for the west but it’s just the beginning for another leg of Eastern shows. Check out the dates and get on out to a show. As for the Western Canada folks – thank you to everyone who helped us make the tour a success. All the folks who let us crash and of course the peeps who keep coming out to the show! Y’all rock. See you in the fall.

And now?

Onward through the night.
